The Hermit Club

The Hermit Club is an iconic local music venue that has been around for 50 years and now is dedicated to young people aged 10-19, making it, we think, the only one of its kind in the UK.

It started life back in 70's as an adult education centre but from 1975 onwards, thanks to the vision of John Maynard, it became a music venue hosting Brentwood Folk Club, Monkey Jazz Club, Hermit Comedy Club and gigs 3 nights a week.

The likes of Motorhead, The Blockheads, Russell Brand & Al Murray have all graced the stage along with some of the world's finest jazz musicians )thanks to the clubs link with Ronnie Scotts) plus the club played co- host to the Brentwood Blues Festival

The venue is part of Brentwoods local history, anyone growing up in the town though 70's 80's & 90's will have a story to tell.

It's that heritage that makes the place special, young people that come for the first time soon realise that they aren't just coming to a place that offers them the chance to play music, they are stepping into a whole world of musical history. â€‹

The posters that are plastered across the walls tell their own story.

When Essex County Council threatened to sell the building there was uproar in the town and a petition helped them see sense and hand over the building to be managed by Essex Youth Service.

And so The Hermit CIC was born and for over 10 years has been breathing new life into the venue, working, helping & developing young people to give the chance to make their own history.
